THE SCIENCE OF MEDITATION
Over many years scientific research has demonstrated the benefits of meditation, for example:

1. Awareness: Perspectives on Psychological Science study showed that mindfulness increased: body awareness, self-awareness, regulation of emotion and regulation of attention. These benefits can help treat anxiety disorders, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, pain, sleep problems

2. Lowers stress – literally: research published in 2013 in the journal Health Psychology shows that mindfulness is not only associated with feeling less stressed, it’s also linked with decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol

3. It lets us get to know our true selves: according to the journal Psychological Science – mindfulness can help us conquer common ‘blind spots’ which can lead to greater self-awareness

4. Increased performance: researchers from the University of California found that college students trained in mindfulness performed better on GRE and experienced improvements in working memory

5. Changes the brain: University of Oregon found that integrative body-mind training can result in brain changes that may protect against mental illness by increasing signalling connections in the brain – axonal density and increased protective tissue (myelin) around the axons in the anterior cingulate brain region
